CLOSE CALL IN BEST OF BRITISH FUN POLL
A FUN online vote ended with Royal Dornoch going head-to-head with The Old Course at St Andrews.
Inspired by the World Cup football format, popular blogger and golf course architect Sam Cooper teed-up a Twitter knock-out which saw 32 of the country’s top links going up against each other to decide the nation’s favourite.
Sam, who co-hosts the Golf Badgers Podcast, has played every one of the 225 links courses in Great Britain.
He has amassed nearly 4000 followers @sd_cooper
Sam’s #TheLinksFromTheRoadKnockout attracted more than 17,000 votes in advance of this month’s final.
Perhaps not surprisingly Royal Dornoch missed out to the Home of Golf – but it was a close call.
Initially, The Championship Course and Machrihanish emerged from a group featuring Dumbarnie and Saunton (East) before seeing off Kingsbarns, followed by Machrihanish and, in the semi-final, North Berwick.
Announcing the result of the final vote, Sam noted: “Congratulations to The Old. Hardly surprising that the original is still the best in your eyes. A brilliant final with @royaldornoch taking it all the way – only 1% in it in the end.”
