DONALD ROSS 1872-1948

Donald RossDONALD Ross was born in Dornoch on November 23, 1872.

The birthday of the first professional and “keeper of the green” at Royal Dornoch Golf Club will be toasted on both sides of the Atlantic.

After leaving his Highland hometown, Ross emigrated to the United States as a young man, arriving with just $2 in his pocket.

He went on to design hundreds of courses in North America, creating a unique and lasting legacy, with many of them paying homage to the upturned saucer greens and wide fairways to be found on his beloved links at Royal Dornoch.

Ties recently reinforced with a formal agreement between the golfing communities of Dornoch and Pinehurst have underlined the enduring influence of Ross on either side of the pond.
