“DORNOCH” FIRST PAST THE POST

RACING enthusiasts among our membership will be aware of the American horse christened “Dornoch.”

Our general manager Neil Hampton recently noted that a few members were having a flutter on the Kentucky Derby.

But how many stuck with “Dornoch” for the latest outing in the prestigious Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Springs?

Life member Lorne Rubenstein admitted he had taken his eye off the ball en route to his beloved Highlands.

The Canadian journalist will be marking the 25th anniversary edition of his seminal book “A Season in Dornoch” at the clubhouse on June 19.

On “X” (Twitter as was) Lorne admitted he learned of the 17/1 “Dornoch” upset Triple Crown win on touching down at Heathrow.

The three-year-old, co-owned by 2008 Philadelphia Phillies’ World Series champion Jayson Werth, more than made up for the 10th place finish in the Kentucky Derby.

“This is as good as it gets in horse racing,” he said.

Members keen on the “Sport of Kings” have also kept track of Irish owned “Royal Dornoch,” one of a clutch of horses named after famous golf courses around the world.
