MONDAY MEMORIES: SANDY MORRISON

Former Royal Dornoch finance convener and two times vice-captain of Golspie Golf Club 
 
HE may have been born in the town of Golspie, 10 miles north of Dornoch, but former bakery business owner Sandy has played an integral role in the life of his adopted home. 

In our latest interview for the popular “Monday Memories” sit downs with long-time Royal Dornoch members, Sandy jokes that he was the “fastest incomer” to take up a role on the club’s management committee, with a spell as finance convener following further down the line. 

In addition to being a long-standing member of Golspie Golf Club, where he was twice vice-captain, Sandy’s membership at Royal Dornoch has passed the 50-year mark. 

He has witnessed vast changes at the club over half a century, but his views of the Championship Course have never changed, despite teeing-up at well-known venues in foreign parts. 

“I think it is the best golf course in the world,” he declared. “We are happy to share, and delighted people are coming from all over the place to play. It’s all very different from when we would try to sign up visitors on the day!”  

Among his many roles in the life of the community, Sandy served as a Justice of the Peace and as an Honorary Sheriff. 

Might that have been a little awkward, given the size of Dornoch? 

“I would see people I knew every time I sat to judge them. But nobody ever asked me to stand down,” he said.
