SERIOUS COMPETITION AND SERIOUS FUN MARKS SHIELD WEEK

NEIL Hampton is no stranger to the challenges and delights of Carnegie Shield week at Royal Dornoch.

The club’s general manager has participated several times in the competition for one of the most iconic trophies in amateur golf.

With 50 days before the 2026 event tees-off on the Championship Course, Neil has been reflecting on why the battle to claim the Shield is the highlight of the golfing calendar at Royal Dornoch.

Neil knows all about the “out of body” first tee nerves as the qualifiers get under way, desperately hoping to find the fairway and avoid the bunkers awaiting an errant drive.

And in his management role, he will savour the buzz golfers gathering from near and far will bring to the new clubhouse in August.

Shield week, he maintains, is all about “serious competition, and serious fun,” with friendships formed and renewed away from the course.

The clubhouse is always a magnet for competitors unwinding and exchanging tales of their day on the links.

It’s inevitably something of an endurance test, with the ultimate winner having to maintain form throughout the week on one of the world’s most revered links courses.

“We are fortunate that the tournament has kudos behind it, coupled with the course it is played on,” admits Neil.
